Its mission is to support Italy’s sustainable development. Its research activities focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, nuclear energy, climate and the environment, safety and human health, new technologies, and electric system research.ChallengeENEA’s scientific research involves processing huge amounts of data, which takes enormous computing power. It already operates three supercomputing clusters—CRESCO1*, CRESCO2* and CRESCO3*—from the ENEA Research Center in Portici, Naples. It was eager to add a fourth to bolster its computational capabilities and remain at the forefront of international research. Silvio Migliori, engineer at ENEA, explains, “The evolution of supercomputers is such that the technology needs to be updated every three years.
