Ohio Supercomputer Center: High-Performance Computing as a Competitive Differentiator

Recognizing high-performance computing (HPC) as a strategic resource, the Ohio Board of Regents established the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) in 1987 to provide platforms and expertise for universities and industrial collaborators across the state. OSC’s newest flagship supercomputer, powered by the Intel Xeon processor 5600 series, delivers 88 TF of peak performance and benefits education, economic progress, and research throughout Ohio. Based on actual benchmarked performance, the system is the 70th fastest and ninth most efficient academic supercomputer in the world, and the 17th fastest and second most efficient system among academic institutions in North America.

CHALLENGES
• Flexible capacity. OSC’s IT leaders need high performance and capacity to support the wide variety of applications used by academic researchers, students, and faculty, as well as large and small businesses. • Data center constraints. OSC’s 22-year-old data center is limited in its power and cooling capacity.

SOLUTION
• High-performance servers and storage. The new OSC supercomputer uses 692 HP ProLiant* SL390 G7 servers with dual Intel Xeon processors X5650 and 48 GB of memory per node. Nodes are connected via quad data rate (QDR) InfiniBand* adapters, and storage controllers use Intel Xeon processors 5600 series as well. The system runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux* and also includes two HP ProLiant DL380 login nodes.
