We have invested in California for five decades, since our founding in Mountain View in 1968.
Investing in California
We purchased our first piece of property – a 26-acre pear orchard on the corner of Coffin Road and Central Expressway in Santa Clara, California in 1970. Today, we have 15,000 employees across the state at three major sites in Santa Clara, San Jose, and Folsom, and at research and development sites in Irvine and San Diego. Santa Clara is home to Intel’s corporate headquarters and the flagship Intel Museum, which showcases five decades of Intel® innovations.
From investing in education and promoting broad economic development initiatives, to working hand-in-hand with neighbors, Intel has long been committed to applying technology and the talents of our employees to broaden access to opportunity and be an asset to our community. Over the last five years, Intel and the Intel Foundation gave more than $80 million in grants, donations, and in-kind gifts to California schools, universities, and non-profits. In addition, each year our employees generously donate their time, volunteering approximately 275,000 hours in the community.
We continually strive to improve our operations and minimize our impact on the environment. A micro wind turbine array sits on top of our headquarters in Santa Clara, and our Folsom campus solar installation is the largest private solar carport in the country. In addition, each year we purchase enough renewable energy certificates to meet 100% of our U.S. electricity use. Sustainable water management is also critical to our operations, and in 2017 we adopted a new goal to restore 100% of our global water use by 2025.
We believe that in order to shape the future of technology, we must be representative of that future. By bringing together people with a wide range of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences, we can continue to innovate and solve the world’s toughest challenges.
Our California employees are focused on a range of technology, including mobile computing, security, programmable solutions, cloud computing, and more. Since 2000, we have made more than $4 billion in capital investments in the state. In addition, an independent economic impact study we commissioned found that for every Intel job in the U.S., an additional 13 American jobs are supported.
The Folsom site is a center of excellence for graphics, chipsets and solid state drives, delivering innovative technology and support for a range of devices and client platforms. With close to 6,000 employees, Intel is Folsom’s largest private sector employer, and one of the Sacramento region’s top 5 private employers. Intel Folsom employees are especially committed to the community, with more than 50% volunteering nearly 200,000 hours at local nonprofits each year.

Santa Clara is home to Intel’s corporate headquarters and the flagship Intel Museum, which showcases five decades of Intel® innovations. The Santa Clara site is involved in engineering, design, research and development, and software engineering, and houses several corporate organizations, including sales and marketing, legal, supply chain, and human resources. With more than 6,500 employees, Intel is one of the largest employers in Santa Clara. In 2015, Intel acquired Altera, a leading California-based provider of field-programmable gate array technology. Now a part of Intel, the Programmable Solutions Group’s 1700 employees work on a broad portfolio of programmable logic solutions at our San Jose campus, which is also home to Intel’s Silicon Valley Innovation Center and Autonomous Driving Garage.
